Custom properties and SharePoint 2010 BDC Models in Visual Studio

The Business Data Connectivity (BCS) Service in SharePoint 2010 is one of the features which routinely shows me some serious value and reward. Working with external line-of-business (LOB) application data in MOSS 2007 wasn’t the most straightforward development task with one of the biggest constraints (in this developer’s opinion) being the lack of tooling. Microsoft has more than made up for this shortcoming by providing great tools for BCS that are now baked in to the Visual Studio 2010 and SharePoint Designer 2010 products. For all of us that have been using Office 2007 and newer, you have surely become comfortable with the Ribbon in Office. As I am sure most of you know, SharePoint 2010 incorporates the Ribbon as a very impressive set of JavaScript driven features. However, as much as I love the Ribbon architecture in SharePoint, not everyone shares my sentiment.
